Make Your Own Windmill - Reduce Your Power Bill By 75%

Would you like to significantly cut down your power bill and possibly even eliminate it? People are building their own wind generators and doing exactly that. Is it possible and practical for the average person to make their own windmill too? Yes, but you need to know exactly what you're doing so you don't waste a lot of time or end up spending too much money on materials.

The great thing about building your own wind turbine is that it can be done very inexpensively. Buying a manufactured kit can be expensive (over $1000) and there is really no need to do it. Most of your materials can easily be found at a salvage yard for under $150.

Finding the right materials may mean visiting a few salvage yards around town, but that can all be part of the fun. It's a very educational experience too... perhaps a project you'd like to get your kids involved with.

One of the items you'll need is an old DC motor. Your best option is one that is weatherproof and is brushless so it lasts longer. Look for a DC motor is old salvaged items like treadmills, sewing machines, washing machines, etc. You should be able to find one for around $30 - $40.

The rotor blades are the items that many people get way too carried away with. There is no perfect design but plenty of opinions on this! What's the point of spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the "perfect" rotor blades? Isn't saving money one of the main reasons for wanting to make your own windmill in the first place?

Another thing to consider is how do you want to mount your wind turbine? Do you want a 75 foot tower or a small decorative tower only a few feet high? Remember, the higher your structure, the more wind it will catch... and the more free power you're creating.

If you decide to take on this project, the first thing to do is find a step by step instruction manual. Most of the manuals I've seen are way too complicated for the average person to follow. That's too bad, because isn't exactly rocket science. If you're want to learn how to make your own windmill, stick to the instruction books that are written in layman's terms and keep things simple.
